I was in my second year of college and started researching four-year colleges to attend when a friend introduced me to Oyindamola Shoola. I must say she was my miracle at that point because she motivated me to see things "outside the box." I was only applying to CUNY colleges because that's all I believed I could afford, and did not want to risk going outside my comfort zone. I felt restricted to my choices and alone in the process, with no one to guide me.
Even though I had an academic advisor while at the community college, I felt most at ease with Oyindamola Shoola. We spoke about my future and where I'd like to see myself. She asked for my resume and cover letter and proofread both documents. She helped me with my college application essays and whenever I needed help with scholarship applications, she gave great and timely advice.
I would have never considered applying to a top university like New York University if it wasn't for Oyindamola because I was worried that admission officers wouldn't give a community college student a chance. Shoola counseled me and placed me in the right direction with important information that I don't think I would have received anywhere. Through her guidance, I applied to various schools including NYU and gained admission! I gained a number of scholarships such as a United Negro College Fund, $5,000 scholarship and more.
Till this day, I attribute my admission into NYU to Oyindamola Shoola, and I am forever grateful for her kindness.
